The New App

A few weeks ago, we introduced the new look of Keeping, which also includes a revamped app. Over the past few weeks, we’ve finalized the new iOS and Android app. The Android app is now available in Google Play, and the iOS app will soon be available in the App Store.

Highlights

The new apps are quite different from previous versions. We focused heavily on improving the day selection feature for logging hours. You can now simply pull down the calendar to select a different date.

We also added shortcuts for creating or editing time entries, allowing you to quickly adjust minutes, quarters, and hours. These functions can be disabled if you don’t need them.

We also prioritized accessibility. The entire app is compatible with TalkBack on Android and VoiceOver on iOS. And of course, there’s a dark mode!

Technology

The previous apps were built as "native apps" for iOS and Android, meaning each was developed in a specific programming language for its respective platform. At the time, this approach provided the best user experience compared to the available "hybrid" technologies. A hybrid app functions across multiple platforms, sharing a core while allowing platform-specific modifications for the interface or navigation structure.

One downside of developing and maintaining native apps was that each new feature had to be developed separately for each app. For this reason, we began exploring other available technologies. Since then, several advancements have been made in mobile app development.

The new apps are built with Flutter, a cross-platform framework. Flutter offers a strong user experience, and its cross-platform nature is a great fit for our app. Both the iOS and Android apps share core functionality but have distinct interfaces for each platform, allowing us to develop new features faster.

Upcoming Developments

Over the coming months, we will be adding new features to the apps. We’ll share more about these updates in a future blog post!
