Our Tips for Managing Your Remote Team
Currently, many people are working from home. While there are certainly benefits to remote work, it also has its challenges. Many managers face one of the most difficult hurdles: how do you effectively manage your team when everyone is in a different location? We’re sharing our tips.
Set aside time for daily check-ins
As a manager, it’s important to check in with your team members every day. A daily check-in helps you stay aware of what everyone is working on and how it’s going. This isn’t about tracking whether they’re working quickly or correctly. Ideally, you’re working with a team you trust to do their best work. A daily check-in lets you keep an overview of ongoing tasks and allows you to connect with colleagues on a personal level. Asking about their weekend or personal situations can build motivation and support.
Use the right (online) tools
There are now many tools available for remote work. Tools like Todoist can help you keep track of to-do lists, while our own app assists with time tracking. This also helps you stay aware of how long tasks are taking. Additionally, tools like Zoom or Slack are essential for staying in touch with each other. Staying informed is crucial for remote work, and these tools are great for that!
Send a newsletter
Newsletters are often used to keep clients informed, but are your own employees subscribed? A newsletter ensures that everyone gets the most important updates and news.
Consider each other's work styles
While some people enjoy frequent meetings, others prefer minimal interruptions. Some like to work with music, while others prefer silence. Some people like to plan ahead, while others work task by task. Everyone has a unique work style, and you’ll quickly notice these differences in remote work. Identify which elements need alignment and clearly communicate them, but also allow space for employees to work in their preferred style.
Don’t forget to team-build
A night of bowling or a dinner out might not be possible for now, but you can still organize an online pub quiz or virtual happy hour on platforms like Google Meet! These are unusual times, and it’s important to keep thinking of creative solutions. Remember to have fun together – it will help your team come through this stronger.
We hope these tips help you manage your team. We’re confident our time-tracking software can also be a valuable tool in supporting you!
